Why We Appreciate Our Incredible Dance Parents at Smartt Steps

At Smartt Steps, we know there’s a lot of talk about “dance parents.” Stereotypes paint them as overly competitive, focused solely on their own child, and sometimes a bit too involved. But here at Smartt Steps, our parents defy those clichés in the most amazing ways. They’re not just part of our studio—they’re the heart of our community.

What sets our parents apart is their unwavering support and encouragement for everything we do. They’re like the ultimate hype team, cheering for every dancer, celebrating every accomplishment, and always ready to lift us up. Whether it’s showing up early to help, volunteering during a hectic competition day, or simply offering a kind word, their investment in the studio and their children’s growth is unmatched.

One of the most remarkable things about our dance parents is their teamwork. They’re always willing to jump in, often without being asked. If a parent can’t make it to a competition, another mom or dad steps in, grabbing costumes, sewing on rhinestones, or ensuring every detail is perfect. It’s not just about their own child—it’s about the success of every dancer.

And then there’s the magic that happens in our lobby. Our parents don’t just share updates on dance schedules; they talk about life. They support each other in deeply meaningful ways, lending advice, a listening ear, or even just a smile on a hard day. The energy and effort they pour into our dancers and into each other create a community that feels like family.

At Smartt Steps, we don’t just teach dance—we build connections. And none of that would be possible without the positivity, flexibility, and dedication of our incredible parents.

To every Smartt Steps parent: thank you for being the heartbeat of our studio. We see you, we appreciate you, and we’re so grateful to have you in our corner. Together, we’re raising strong dancers and an even stronger community.

The Power of Love in Dance

Dance is more than movement; it’s an expression of the soul. Art, in all its forms, thrives on passion, dedication, and creativity. But beneath every perfected pirouette or powerful leap lies something even more essential–love. Love for the art, love for the process, and the love shared within a dance studio.

Loving dance is what keeps dancers going, even on the hardest days. Rehearsals can be grueling, competitions nerve-wracking, and progress sometimes feels painstakingly slow. In these moments, the love for dance acts as the driving force. It reminds dancers why they fell in love with the craft in the first place—the freedom of expression, the magic of storytelling through movement, and the thrill of creating beauty that resonates with others.

Equally important is receiving love in the dance studio. A supportive and nurturing environment can transform a dancer’s experience. Constructive feedback paired with encouragement fosters growth, while moments of celebration—whether for small wins or major accomplishments—build confidence. When dancers feel truly valued and supported by their teachers and peers, they find the strength to push through challenges and unlock their full potential.

At Smartt Steps,  love of dance and each other is the foundation. It’s the spark that ignites creativity, the fuel that sustains perseverance, and the glue that binds a community. By nurturing love for the art and for each other, dancers can create something truly extraordinary—both in their own lives and in the hearts of those they inspire. But honestly, our dancers say it best. We asked them what they love about dance:

I love to dance because the community has brought me so much joy and true friends. Dance has shown me that it’s okay to be my true self.

Zoe Stimpson

I love dance because it makes me feel free from all the stress at school.

Ainslee Sayar

I love dance because it helps me get better, and it motivates me to be better as a person and as a dancer. I also make good friends.

Madison Settle

I love to dance because it lets me escape from my real-world problems and it gives me a way to express my feelings through movement.

How to Prepare for Dance Competition Weekends

Competition weekends are an exciting and intense time for dancers. They require high energy, focus, and stamina, but they can also be physically and mentally demanding. At Smartt Steps we want our dancers to take on more responsibility for the preparation and their recovery as they get older.  Here are a few tips for how dancers can optimize their competition experience:

Preparation Tips

Proper preparation can make or break a competition performance. Follow these steps to ensure you’re ready to shine:

Prioritize Rest:

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night the week before the competition. A well-rested body and mind perform better under pressure.

Fuel Your Body:

Eat a balanced diet rich in proteins, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Avoid sugary or heavy foods that can sap your energy.

Pack Ahead:

Create a checklist of essentials, including costumes, shoes, makeup, snacks, water, and any props. Pack your dance bag a day or two in advance to avoid last-minute stress.

Visualize Success:

Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself performing your routine perfectly. This mental rehearsal can boost confidence and focus.

Prepare for Surprises:

Bring extra hair ties, safety pins, and sewing kits. You never know when you might face a costume malfunction or unexpected need.

Recovery Tips

After the curtain falls and the awards are handed out, recovery becomes just as important as preparation. Here’s how to bounce back and stay healthy:

Cool Down: Right after performing, spend 10-15 minutes stretching and doing light movement to help your body return to a resting state. This reduces soreness and speeds recovery.

Rehydrate and Refuel:
Drink plenty of water and eat a nutritious meal or snack that includes protein and carbohydrates to replenish your energy stores.

Take Care of Your Body:
Ice any sore or swollen areas, and consider using a foam roller or massage ball to ease muscle tension. If you’re feeling especially sore, take a warm bath with Epsom salts.

Prioritize Rest and Sleep:
Allow your body time to recover by getting plenty of rest in the days following the competition. Consider taking a day off from intense physical activity.

Reflect on Your Performance:
Review your performance videos to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Celebrate your accomplishments and set goals for the future.

Stay Positive:
Whether or not you take home a trophy, remember that competitions are about growth and experience. Use the weekend to motivate and inspire your future dancing journey.

Supporting Your Dancer: Tips for Parents as Competition Season Ramps Up

As a parent of a dancer, your role is vital to their success and happiness. Competitive dance is demanding, both physically and emotionally, and the right kind of support from parents can make all the difference. Here are some practical ways to be your dancer’s biggest ally while helping them navigate the ups and downs of the dance world.

Be Their Cheerleader, Not Their Coach or Judge

  •  Focus on encouragement: Celebrate their effort and achievements, big or small. Phrases like “You did great!” or “I’m so proud of how hard you’ve worked!” can boost their confidence.
  • Leave the critique to the professionals: Their dance teachers and choreographers are trained to provide constructive feedback. Your role is to uplift and inspire.
  • Avoid comparisons: Every dancer has their own journey. Comparing them to others can create unnecessary pressure.

Foster a Positive Attitude About Competitions

  • Teach Resilience: Not every performance will result in a trophy or top placement. Help your dancer understand the value of hard work and learning from challenges.
  • Celebrate participation: Remind them that showing up, trying their best, and enjoying the experience is what truly matters.
  • Avoid comparisons: Cheer for other dancers and studios, teaching your child to respect the talent and effort of others.

Help Them Stay Organized

  • Keep track of schedules: Dance competitions and rehearsals can be overwhelming. Maintain a calendar to help your dancer stay on top of practices, costume fittings, and performance dates
  • Pack essentials: Help them prepare their dance bag with all the necessities—costumes, shoes, makeup, water, snacks, and emergency items like safety pins or hair ties.
  • Plan for travel: If competitions require traveling, ensure you arrive on time and plan for any contingencies, like traffic or last-minute costume fixes.

Support Their Physical and Emotional WellBeing

  • Encourage healthy habits: Make sure your dancer eats nutritious meals, stays hydrated, and gets plenty of rest, especially during competition season.
  • Be their safe space: Let them vent about tough practices or disappointments without fear of judgment. Sometimes, they just need someone to listen.
  • Recognize burnout: If they seem overwhelmed or exhausted, talk to them and their coach to explore ways to lighten their load.

Supporting your competitive dancer means finding the balance between encouragement and guidance. When you focus on being their cheerleader rather than their critic, you build their confidence and allow them to thrive in an activity they love. Together, you can make their competitive dance journey an unforgettable experience.
