Why Summer Is the Perfect Time to Start Dance

If your child has never taken a dance class before, summer is the best time to begin.

We hear it often from parents. “We are curious, but we are not sure if my child will like it.” “It feels like a big commitment.” “We do not know where to start.”

That is exactly why we design summer the way we do.

At Smartt Steps, summer classes are intentionally built to be a low barrier entry point. They are shorter in length. They require less long term commitment. They give families the opportunity to try dance without feeling locked into a full season.

If your child has always wanted to try hip hop, a two day workshop is a simple way to see if it sparks excitement. If ballet feels intriguing but a full year seems overwhelming, summer allows space to explore without pressure. Dancers can experience different styles, meet different teachers, and discover what feels like the right fit.

Summer is about exploration.

It is about giving children the freedom to move, create, and discover something new in a welcoming environment. It is also a wonderful way for parents to step inside the studio, meet our staff, and experience the culture for themselves.

We believe dance should feel accessible. It should feel encouraging. It should feel like something your child can grow into, not something they have to be perfect at on day one.

For returning dancers, summer is an opportunity to stay strong and continue building technique. For new families, it is simply a starting place. A chance to try. A chance to see if this could become part of your rhythm.

What we consistently see is that when children are given the space to explore, they often discover more than a class. They find confidence. They find friendships. They find a place where they feel known.

If dance has ever been on your mind, summer is the perfect time to take that first step.

Our full summer schedule is now available, and fall registration is open as well. We invite you to explore the options, try a class or workshop, and see what might begin with just one experience.

Loving Your Dance Friends Well

February gives us a natural opportunity to talk about love.

At Smartt Steps, we see love show up in beautiful, practical ways every single week.It looks like little dancers walking into class with valentines for their friends. It sounds like giggles in the lobby and whispered encouragement before someone steps on stage. It feels like a teammate squeezing your hand during awards and saying, “You’ve got this.”

Dance is hard work. Long rehearsals. Sore muscles. Competition weekends. Nerves before performances. When young people move through that kind of effort together, something deeper begins to form.
Friendship.

And not the surface kind.

The kind that shows up.

We saw it when one of our dancers was cast in a school play. Several of her teammates showed up in the audience to cheer her on. They did not have to be there. They wanted to be there.
We saw it in an even more powerful way this year. After nationals, one of our dancers faced a major surgery and was unable to leave her home for weeks. Her teen company teammates decided she should not miss out on the joy of performing. They recreated Hamilton in full costume and performed the entire show in her living room.

Hours long. Every number. Every scene.

That is what it means to be a dance family.

Those kinds of relationships are not accidental. They are built through shared effort, shared goals, and shared growth. When dancers train side by side, push through challenges together, and celebrate each other’s wins, deep friendships form.

So how can we continue loving our dance friends well?

Here are a few tangible ways our Smartt Steps families model that kind of love:

  • Cheer loudly for every dancer. Whether it is your child on stage or someone else’s, every performer deserves encouragement.
  • Write notes of affirmation. A quick message of support can mean more than you realize.
  • Show up outside the studio. Attend the play, the game, the recital. Friendships matter beyond dance.
  • Celebrate effort, not just outcomes. Hard work, courage, and growth deserve recognition.
  • Speak kindly in the lobby and on the sidelines. Our dancers are always listening.

At Smartt Steps, excellence matters. Strong technique matters. Growth matters.

But so does love.

When we intentionally build a culture of encouragement and support, we raise dancers who are not only skilled, but also compassionate and confident. That is the kind of community we are proud to cultivate.

And it is one worth celebrating this February.

The Gift of Dance: A Present That Lasts a Lifetime

During the holiday season, we often think about gifts that bring joy in the moment. At Smartt Steps, we believe dance is one of the rare gifts that keeps giving long after the music stops.
For children and teens, dance brings joy, discipline, and creativity. But the true value of dance is how it carries into adulthood, shaping confident, capable, and resilient people.
The benefits of dance extend far beyond the studio. Yes, students learn technique and performance, but they also develop habits and skills they will use throughout their lives. That is what makes dance such a powerful gift.

Lifelong Skills Dance Teaches

Even after dancers hang up their shoes, these lessons stay with them:

  • Time management – balancing school, rehearsals, and performances teaches responsibility.
  • Teamwork – working with classmates and supporting fellow performers fosters collaboration.
  • Confidence – performing on stage builds poise and presence in front of others.
  • Resilience – learning to handle mistakes and try again teaches persistence.
  • Discipline – regular practice instills focus and dedication.
  • Creativity – dance encourages self-expression and problem-solving through movement.
  • Health and wellness habits – awareness of hydration, nutrition, and physical fitness lasts well beyond dance years.

For many families, giving the gift of dance means more than enrolling in a class. It means investing in a child’s well-being, happiness, and future. Every class is a step toward building character, friendships, and memories that will never fade.

At Smartt Steps, we see every day how dance transforms lives. Parents see their children grow in confidence. Students discover a passion that brings joy and purpose. And long after they leave the studio, former dancers carry the lessons of discipline, resilience, and creativity into college, careers, and relationships.

This December, as you think about gifts that truly matter, remember that dance is more than a season, it is a lifetime investment. The gift of dance continues to inspire, strengthen, and shape young lives long after the last recital curtain closes.

A Note from Marye and Jason: Thank You to our Dance Parents

At Smartt Steps, we talk a lot about the power of dance to shape confidence, discipline, and joy in our students. But in this season of gratitude, we want to pause and say thank you to the people who make it all possible: our dance parents.

From the very beginning, Smartt Steps has been more than a dance studio. Parents are at the heart of what makes our community so unique. New families often notice it right away in the lobby. Whether you are a first-time dance parent or have been with us for years, there is a feeling of support and connection that is hard to find anywhere else.

We know the sacrifices parents make to give their children the gift of dance. As parents ourselves, we understand the time, energy, and financial commitment it takes. Many of you sit for hours in the lobby with multiple kids, balancing homework, school events, and family responsibilities. Yet what happens in those hours is extraordinary. We don’t see gossip or competition. Instead, we see conversations about real life—kids at school, aging parents, work challenges, and celebrations. Those relationships are valuable. They create a community that uplifts not only our dancers, but entire families.

It’s not unusual to see grandparents in the lobby, too, watching the monitors and celebrating each new step. That multigenerational support shows our students that their dancing matters, and that their family is proud to be part of their journey.

We believe one of the strongest reasons students stay and thrive at Smartt Steps is because their parents feel connected—to teachers, to other families, and to a larger community. Dance here is not just drop-off and pick-up. It’s an experience that includes the whole family.

As we enter November, we are deeply thankful for our Smartt Steps parents. You are our partners in nurturing strong, confident, and joyful dancers. Thank you for trusting us with your children and for building this community with us.

Balancing It All: Why Dancers Need Rest and Recovery

For many dancers, fall brings a full schedule of school, homework, rehearsals, performances, and time with friends. After a month of learning new choreography and keeping up with homework, it can feel impossible to stay fueled, hydrated, and rested. Yet these are the very things that keep dancers strong, focused, and ready to perform. The good news is that dancers can control more than they think.

Hydration and Nutrition Matter

Dance is demanding, and the body needs both water and protein to keep up.

  • Even mild dehydration can lower coordination and focus by 10 to 20 percent, making injuries more likely.
  • Aim for about half your body weight in ounces of water daily, and more on long rehearsal days.
  • Protein helps muscles recover. Teen dancers should include 15–20 grams of protein in meals or snacks after class.

What Dancers Can Control

Every dancer has choices that can make a big difference, even with a busy schedule:

  • Bring a water bottle and make refilling it a non-negotiable habit.
  • Choose protein-rich snacks like yogurt, trail mix, or nut butter that are quick and portable.
  • Notice your body. If you are more tired or sore than usual, give yourself permission to rest.
  • Set aside time to unplug. A screen-free break before bed helps the body and mind truly recharge.

How Parents Can Help Younger Dancers

Parents can guide younger dancers to build these same habits:

  • Provide meals with a balance of protein, fruits, and vegetables.
  • Encourage consistent bedtimes and quiet time away from devices.
  • Remind dancers that rest is not “skipping” practice—it is training smart.

The Gift of Fall Break

October’s fall break is the perfect time to slow down. After the busy kickoff to the season, dancers need both physical and mental rest. True recovery means more than sleeping in. It means taking time away from screens, finding moments of calm, and letting the body and mind reset. By choosing rest, dancers return to the studio energized, focused, and stronger.
Rest is not a weakness. It is part of the work. When dancers take charge of what they can—hydration, nutrition, unplugging, and recovery—they set themselves up for success on stage and beyond.

A Culture of Cheering Each Other On

At Smartt Steps, we’re more than just a dance studio—we’re a community that cheers each other on, in every sense of the word. Yes, our families show up with carpools, help zip costumes, and make sure everyone has a snack, but our culture of support runs much deeper. It’s not just about helping out—it’s about modeling kindness, encouragement, and community-mindedness in a space that can sometimes feel competitive.

In the world of youth activities, it’s easy for competition to creep in—not just between dancers, but between parents, too. Everyone wants their child to succeed, and when awards are involved, emotions can run high. But at Smartt Steps, our goal is bigger than trophies. We want to raise dancers who are not only skilled, but also respectful, grounded, and compassionate. That starts with the environment we create, and the tone set by the adults around them.

Even on the most intense competition days—solo awards, team rankings, long weekends away—we are so proud of how our dancers treat each other. They offer high-fives, hugs, and encouraging words no matter the outcome. That doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a reflection of the values our parents are modeling every day. From the sidelines to the studio lobby, our families know that how we treat others matters just as much as how we perform.

So how can we keep building this culture of support?

Here are a few things our Smartt Steps families do well—and ways we can all keep growing:

  • Cheer for every dancer. Whether it’s your child on stage or someone else’s, clap loud and smile big. Every kid notices.
  • Celebrate effort, not just outcome. Win or lose, remind your dancer how proud you are of their hard work.
  • Stay positive in the lobby. The way we talk about classes, costumes, teachers, and other dancers shapes the culture.
  • Be generous with your help and your praise. Grab the hair spray, offer a ride, or compliment a performance that moved you.
  • Lead with kindness. Especially when things feel hectic or emotional. Our kids are always watching.

At Smartt Steps, support isn’t just something we say—it’s something we do. And when we all commit to creating that kind of environment, our dancers grow into the kind of people who lift others up, both on and off the stage.

Why Our Teachers Keep Training

At Smartt Steps, we believe that great dancers come from great teachers—and that means our commitment to excellent dance education doesn’t stop at the students. Whether a child walks into our studio fo r a weekly recreational class or trains at the competitive level, we want every dancer to receive high-quality, up-to-date instruction. That starts with a faculty that is always learning, always growing, and always striving to be better.

Dance is an ever-evolving art form. New techniques, stylistic shifts, and teaching methods emerge every year, and it’s important for our staff to stay current. Continuing education gives our teachers the opportunity to expand their knowledge, learn from other professionals, and bring fresh inspiration back to the classroom. It also lets them model something powerful for our dancers: the idea that learning never stops. A stagnant teacher isn’t just less effective—they’re less inspiring. We want our students to see that you can always improve, no matter how experienced you are.

That’s why we’ve made ongoing education a priority as we head into the new season. From attending workshops and conventions to engaging in mentorship and teacher training programs, our team is investing in their own growth—so they can pour that same energy into helping your dancers grow. Below are just a few of the ways our staff has leaned into professional development over the past year. We’re proud of the work they’re doing and even more excited about how it will show up in the studio this season.

Here are some highlights of what our faculty has been up to:

Benefits of Recreational and Competitive Dance

At Smartt Steps, we know not every dancer is trying to go pro—and that’s the beauty of it. We have so many kids who come here simply because they love to move, love the music, and love being part of a positive, welcoming community.

If you’re wondering whether dance is right for your child, here’s what we want you to know:

Dance Doesn’t Have to Take Over Your Life

With youth sports becoming more intense and high-pressure, dance can be a refreshing option.

  • You can take one class a week and still get all the benefits
  • You don’t have to quit other activities
  • It’s a fun, low-commitment way to stay active and creative

For many families, dance is about balance—something enjoyable that fits into everyday life without taking it over.

Dance Builds Life Skills Without the Burnout

Even in recreational classes, dance teaches powerful lessons:

  • Work ethic and commitment — Dancers learn to show up, stick with it, and finish what they start
  • Respect and focus — Class structure teaches how to listen, follow directions, and be coachable
  • Confidence and presence — Dancers learn how to carry themselves and feel proud of what they’ve accomplished

It’s also a great outlet for mental health, self-expression, and movement—without the stress of high-stakes competition.

A Community That Feels Like Home

What sets Smartt Steps apart is the way it feels to be here.

  • Our dancers look forward to being around kind, encouraging people
  • Kids form real friendships and look out for one another
  • Homeschoolers, shy kids, and outgoing performers alike find a place to belong

It’s not just about what they’re learning—it’s about who they’re becoming in the process.

There’s a Place for Everyone

Every family has different goals, and that’s why our schedule has something for everyone.

  • Recreational dance for fun, fitness, and friendship
  • Competitive options for those who want more challenge
  • Classes that support balance with other sports or commitments

Not sure where your child fits? That’s okay. We’re happy to help you figure it out.

Give us a call or visit here to learn more.

At Smartt Steps, there’s room for every kind of dancer—and every kind of family.

Celebrating Dance Dads at Smartt Steps

With Father’s Day approaching, we want to take a moment to shout out the amazing dance dads at Smartt Steps. Years ago, we had dancers whose dads we rarely saw—but now? Our Dance Dad gang is stronger than ever.

Showing Up & Cheering Loud

These dads aren’t just dropping off and picking up—they’re showing up, hooping and hollering, and proudly wearing the gear. They’re in the crowd, making sure their kids feel supported.

Single Dads Stepping Up

In our  programs, we have several single dads who not only sign their daughters up for dance but also take the time to learn the ropes:

  • Asking for links to order the right shoes.
  • Bringing their kids to class and making sure they’re prepared.
  • Being hands-on in a space where moms traditionally take the lead.

A Game-Changing Message

For moms, dance involvement is often built in—you’re in the dressing room, fixing hair, handling costumes. But for dads, it’s a choice—and that choice sends a powerful message:

  • I value what you value.
  • I think what you’re doing is worth my time.
  • YOU are worth my time.

That kind of support can be life-changing for a young dancer.

Dance Dads Make an Impact

When dads invest in their child’s passion for dance, it helps shape who they are and who they will become. Confidence, discipline, and determination grow stronger when a child knows their dad is in their corner.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate YOU, Dance Dads—for showing up, cheering loud, and proving that dance is for everyone.

Dance Moms Redefined at Smartt Steps

With Mother’s Day around the corner, we want to take a moment to brag on our incredible Smartt Steps moms. Forget the drama-filled reality TV version of Dance Moms—here, our moms are all about support, encouragement, and teamwork.

Passing on the Love of Dance

Many of our moms know the dance world firsthand—from dancing in college to performing professionally. One was a Radio City Rockette, another danced and coached for the Minnesota Vikings Dance Team and several competed at high levels and now cheer on the next generation.

They get the pressure of performing and appreciate the hard work their kids put in. They are actively passing on the passion and love of dance to the next generation.

Juggling Dance & Sports & All The Activities

Our moms are the ultimate multitaskers—bouncing between football, baseball, and dance. They make it work by:

  • Carpooling to help each other out.
  • Fixing hair and costumes for competitions.
  • Cheering on every dancer, not just their own.

Competition with Class

At Smartt Steps, we teach dancers to compete well—and our moms set the example. They support their kids while keeping dance in perspective, helping dancers win with grace and lose with dignity.

Showing Love to Our Staff

Our moms don’t just support their kids—they lift up our teachers too with:

  • Coffee runs to brighten rehearsal days.
  • Encouraging notes to show appreciation.
  • A genuine love for the entire Smartt Steps family.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating YOU, Smartt Steps moms. Thank you for your dedication, kindness, and for redefining what it means to be a Dance Mom. We’re lucky to have you!
